Shuffle Lines is a simple way to randomly rearrange complete lines of text. Paste a list, set of sentences, names, questions, ideas, vocabulary, or other line-separated content into the editor and click Shuffle Lines. The tool changes the order of the lines without changing the content inside them.

The processing happens directly in your browser for normal text input, so you can shuffle text without creating an account or sending your content to an external service.

What Is a Shuffle Lines Tool?

A Shuffle Lines tool randomly changes the position of complete lines in a text document. If your original text contains four lines, the same four lines appear in the result, but their order is randomized.

This is different from sorting lines alphabetically or numerically. It is also different from reversing lines, which simply changes the order from first-to-last into last-to-first. Shuffle Lines uses randomization instead of a fixed ordering rule.

The tool also does not randomize individual characters or words. Each line is treated as an individual piece of text and moved as a complete unit.

How to Shuffle Lines Online

  1. Paste or upload your text.
  2. Put each item on its own line.
  3. Choose whether empty lines should be preserved.
  4. Click Shuffle Lines.
  5. Review the randomized order.
  6. Copy or download the result.

If you want another random arrangement of the same input, click Shuffle Again. A new randomization is performed each time rather than simply rotating the previous result.

Why Use This Shuffle Lines Tool?

Randomizing line order can be useful whenever the original sequence should not determine what comes first. Because the tool preserves complete lines, it works particularly well for lists and other structured line-by-line content.

  • Randomize lists of names or items.
  • Mix vocabulary for study exercises.
  • Randomize questions for practice.
  • Rearrange writing prompts.
  • Randomize ideas or tasks.
  • Mix study material into a new order.
  • Rearrange line-separated datasets.
  • Create a random order for activities.

Shuffle Lines Example

Suppose your input contains these four lines:

Before
First item
Second item
Third item
Fourth item
Possible result
Third item
First item
Fourth item
Second item

The result is only one possible randomized order. Another shuffle can produce a different result. Importantly, the text of each individual line remains unchanged.

How Shuffle Lines Works

The tool uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm. This algorithm processes the collection of lines and randomly selects positions to exchange. It is preferable to sorting lines with a random comparison function because random sorting can produce biased results.

Internally, the tool treats every complete line as an opaque Unicode string. The algorithm does not inspect or modify the characters inside the line. As a result, punctuation, numbers, URLs, spaces, emojis, accented characters, Arabic text, and other Unicode content remain intact.

A cryptographically stronger browser random source is used when available, with a secure fallback path appropriate for normal browser environments.

Shuffle Lines for Different Types of Text

Lists

Put one item per line to create a randomized list. Duplicate items remain in the result rather than being silently removed.

Study Material

Vocabulary, questions, prompts, or short study items can be placed on separate lines and randomized into a new sequence.

Multilingual Text

Shuffle Lines works with Unicode text rather than limiting processing to English characters. Arabic, Somali, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, Amharic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic, Greek and many other scripts can be processed.

RTL and Mixed Text

Right-to-left text is displayed using automatic text direction. A line such as مѴحبا World 123 remains the same line; only its position relative to other lines changes.

Empty Lines and Duplicate Lines

Empty lines can be useful because they sometimes represent intentional spacing in a document. The Preserve empty lines option is enabled by default so those line positions are not accidentally discarded.

If empty lines are not useful for your task, disable the option before shuffling. Duplicate lines are always retained. For example, if "Apple" appears three times in your input, all three occurrences are retained in the randomized output.

Privacy and Security

Normal text shuffling is performed entirely in the browser. The core operation does not require an API, account, or server-side text processing.

User-provided text is inserted into the interface as text rather than HTML. This prevents pasted HTML or script-like content from being interpreted as executable page markup.

Uploaded text files are treated as untrusted input. The tool reads supported text content locally and does not execute the contents of uploaded files.

Supported Text Files

The browser-based upload system supports common text-oriented formats including:

  • TXT and TEXT
  • CSV and TSV
  • LOG
  • Markdown and MD
  • JSON
  • XML
  • HTML and HTM
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • TypeScript

Binary document formats such as PDF, DOCX, RTF, and ODT are not treated as ordinary UTF-8 text files. A document parser or extraction library is required to process those formats correctly, so this implementation does not falsely claim to extract them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Shuffle Lines tool?

A Shuffle Lines tool randomly changes the order of complete lines while keeping the text inside each line unchanged.

How do I shuffle lines online?

Paste or upload your text, make sure each item is on its own line, and click Shuffle Lines. You can then copy or download the result.

Can I shuffle a list randomly?

Yes. Put each list item on its own line and use Shuffle Lines to create a randomized order.

Does Shuffle Lines change the text itself?

No. The tool changes only the position of complete lines. Characters, words, punctuation, numbers, spaces inside lines and Unicode content are preserved.

Can I shuffle Arabic or other languages?

Yes. Lines are handled as Unicode strings, allowing Arabic, Somali, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and many other languages.

Can I upload a text file and shuffle its lines?

Yes. Common text formats including TXT, CSV, TSV, Markdown, JSON, XML, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and TypeScript can be loaded directly in the browser.

Does the tool store my text?

Normal text shuffling happens locally in your browser and does not require uploading your text to a server.

Can I download shuffled lines?

Yes. Click Download to save the result as a UTF-8 text file named shuffled-lines.txt.

Can I shuffle duplicate lines?

Yes. Duplicate lines are preserved. The tool does not automatically remove duplicates.

Can I shuffle empty lines?

Yes. Empty lines can either be preserved or removed before shuffling using the Empty Lines setting.
