Extract Dates Online

The Extract Dates tool helps you find dates hidden inside ordinary text, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, captions, logs, notes, and other supported files. Instead of manually searching through a long document, paste the content or upload a file and the date extractor identifies recognizable date expressions for you.

The tool keeps the original date text while also attempting to provide a normalized representation. This is useful when you need to find dates in text, prepare information for a spreadsheet, review a collection of documents, or clean date-related data before another processing step.

How to Extract Dates from Text

  1. Paste or type your text into the input area.
  2. Alternatively, select Upload File and choose a supported document.
  3. Select your preferred date convention when numeric dates could be ambiguous.
  4. Choose sorting, duplicate handling, context, or year extraction options if needed.
  5. Click Extract Dates.
  6. Copy the results or download them as TXT, CSV, or JSON.

Extract Dates from PDFs and Documents

You can use the tool with several common document formats. Text-based PDFs can be read directly in the browser, while DOCX documents and spreadsheets can be parsed with their corresponding browser libraries. CSV, TSV, JSON, XML, HTML, Markdown, TXT, logs, subtitle files and similar text formats can be processed without sending their contents to a server.

Scanned documents and photographs are different because the date may exist only as pixels. When OCR support is available, the tool can recognize text from common image formats and then run date extraction over the recognized text. OCR can contain recognition mistakes, so results from poor-quality scans should be checked against the source.

Extract Dates from Multiple Languages

Dates do not follow one universal format. A document may contain English month names, French or Spanish dates, Arabic-Indic numerals, Persian-Indic numerals, Cyrillic month names, or East Asian date notation. The extraction engine therefore separates numeral normalization, language resources, date recognition and output formatting instead of assuming that every document is English.

The interface also uses Unicode-aware text processing and direction-aware input so Arabic, Persian, Urdu and mixed left-to-right/right-to-left content can be handled more naturally.

Common Date Formats

Type Examples
ISO 2026-05-12
Numeric 12/05/2026, 05/12/2026, 12-05-2026
Written May 12, 2026; 12 May 2026
Localized 12 de mayo de 2026; 12 mai 2026
East Asian 2026年5月12日; 2026년 5월 12일
Month / year May 2026; 05/2026
Range May 1–5, 2026

Extract and Normalize Dates

Extraction and normalization are not the same operation. Extraction answers “what date was written in the source?” Normalization answers “what consistent representation can be produced from that date?”

For example, the original value May 12, 2026 can be preserved exactly while its normalized representation is 2026-05-12. Keeping both values is important because normalization should never destroy the source information.

Numeric dates can sometimes be ambiguous. For example, 05/06/2026 may represent May 6 or June 5 depending on regional convention. The tool therefore provides date-convention controls rather than silently pretending that every numeric date has one certain meaning.

Use Cases for Date Extraction

  • Cleaning dates in datasets
  • Research and historical document analysis
  • Reviewing large collections of documents
  • Preparing spreadsheet data
  • Project and event planning
  • Content analysis
  • Data migration
  • Finding dates in reports and records
  • Reviewing financial or business documents
  • Organizing timelines

The extracted information is intended as a productivity and data-processing aid. Important dates should be verified against the original source, particularly when OCR, ambiguous numeric formats, damaged documents, or unusual calendars are involved.

How the Date Extractor Works

The tool first converts supported input into text. It then normalizes Unicode punctuation and numeral variants where appropriate, identifies likely date candidates, validates calendar values, determines the likely date format, and optionally creates normalized output.

Contextual checks help prevent ordinary numbers such as telephone numbers, product identifiers, decimal values and account numbers from being incorrectly reported as dates. Standalone year extraction is optional because a four-digit number is not automatically a date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Extract Dates tool?

It is a date extraction tool that searches text and supported files for recognizable date expressions and presents them as organized results.

How do I extract dates from text?

Paste your text into the editor and click Extract Dates. The tool analyzes the text and lists recognized dates.

Can I extract dates from a PDF?

Yes. Text-based PDFs can be processed in the browser. Scanned PDFs may require OCR and can be affected by scan quality.

Can this tool extract dates from Word documents?

DOCX files can be processed in supported browsers. Legacy DOC files may require conversion to DOCX or plain text first.

What date formats are supported?

The extractor recognizes many numeric, written, localized, ISO-style, month/year, East Asian and date-range formats.

Can I extract dates from Arabic text?

The engine supports Arabic text and Arabic-Indic and Persian-Indic numeral normalization for supported date patterns.

Can I extract dates from multiple languages?

Yes. The recognition resources include month and date patterns from multiple language families and scripts.

Can I convert extracted dates to YYYY-MM-DD?

Yes. Select YYYY-MM-DD from the output-format control whenever the date can be reliably normalized.

Does the tool remove duplicate dates?

Yes. Enable Remove duplicates. Duplicate handling uses the normalized date where reliable while retaining the original source value in the displayed result.

Are uploaded files stored?

This implementation processes supported files in the browser rather than intentionally uploading document contents to a processing server. Temporary browser objects are released after processing.

Can I download the extracted dates?

Yes. Results can be downloaded as TXT, CSV, or JSON.

Why was a number not recognized as a date?

The extractor intentionally avoids treating every number as a date. Phone numbers, IDs, prices, versions and unrelated four-digit numbers can otherwise create many false positives.

Accuracy and Privacy

No date extractor can reliably interpret every possible document or every ambiguous date. This tool therefore favors conservative recognition over turning every number into a date. When the source contains an ambiguous format, the selected convention and available context influence normalization.

Supported text extraction is performed locally in the browser. OCR and document parsers are loaded only when their functionality is required. Files are not intentionally saved as part of the extraction workflow.
